The revived London City Ballet comes to the Joyce Theater on October 27 carrying two kinds of history: that of a company restored after a long absence, and that of choreography seldom seen in New York.
Jerome Robbins’s Quiet City returns to a New York stage for the first time since 1991, according to the Joyce. Glen Tetley’s Firebird, a gothic treatment of a familiar ballet subject, appears during the centenary year of the American choreographer’s birth. The works appear on separate programs, so the choice of performance matters.
Artistic director Christopher Marney revived London City Ballet in 2023 after the original company had closed in 1996. The current repertory mixes revivals and newer work rather than attempting to recreate a vanished institution exactly as it was.
Program A contains Ashley Page’s Mephisto Waltz, Tasha Chu’s Soon, Robbins’s Quiet City and John Neumeier’s Ghost Light, with Alina Cojocaru as a guest. It plays October 27 and 28 and the evening of October 31.
Program B pairs Mephisto Waltz with Florent Melac’s Soft Shore, performed with live music, and Tetley’s Firebird. It plays October 29 and 30, the October 31 matinee and November 1.
Such a split is more than a ticketing detail. It creates two distinct portraits of the company, one centered on Robbins and Neumeier, the other on Tetley. The Joyce’s compact stage makes these a welcome opportunity to consider how choreography survives its original performers and circumstances.
