It took Peter Jackson nearly three hours to get the Fellowship of the Ring on the road. At SoHo Playhouse this December, three actors and a sound-effects performer will attempt the same journey in one.
Fly, You Fools!, a stage parody of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, opens December 19, 25 years after the film reached theaters. The comedy ensemble Recent Cutbacks has reduced the 178-minute fantasy adventure to a 60-minute exercise in theatrical ingenuity, using mime, shadow puppets, improvised-looking props and a homemade wind machine to conjure Middle-earth.
Rather than conceal the mechanics of the production, the company makes them part of the entertainment. Performers switch characters in plain sight, while a Foley artist creates the sounds of a much larger world. The setup offers a peculiar reversal of Jackson’s lavish screen spectacle: here, a good deal depends on the audience seeing precisely how the illusion is made.
The show arrives at the SoHo theater after Edinburgh Fringe performances, including a sold-out run in 2025. Director Kristin McCarthy Parker, a co-founder of Recent Cutbacks, also directed the Off-Broadway comedy Puffs, which affectionately revisited another well-known fantasy franchise from the sidelines.
“With the show playing in New York and London at the same time, this is a truly special moment,” McCarthy Parker said in the production announcement. The London engagement, at Southwark Playhouse Borough, begins November 25.
The New York cast announced for the engagement includes Nick Abeel, Regan Sims and McCarthy Parker, with Kelly Robinson providing live Foley. Kerry Ipema is scheduled to perform in place of McCarthy Parker on opening night, December 19.
The production is one half of a holiday double bill from Recent Cutbacks. The other, KEVIN!!!!!, applies the company’s miniature-blockbuster approach to Home Alone, telling the story with puppetry and live effects. It runs December 5 through January 3.
Recent Cutbacks, founded in 2014, has made a specialty of taking films that seem to demand expensive visual effects and rebuilding them with actors, household-scale contraptions and a conspicuous amount of labor. Its earlier Hold On to Your Butts tackled Jurassic Park. The attraction is not simply the recognition of familiar scenes but the pleasure of watching performers solve impossible-looking problems with very little equipment.
Fly, You Fools! runs December 19, 2026, through January 2, 2027, at SoHo Playhouse, 15 Vandam Street. Running time is 60 minutes, and the production is recommended for ages 8 and older. Tickets and individual performance dates are available through the theater.
