On election night, while the country waits for the results, the Apple family will sit down to dinner. Richard Nelson’s We’ll See, the latest installment of his Rhinebeck Panorama, begins previews at the Public Theater on October 25 and officially opens on November 3, the very date on which the play is set.

Barbara, Jane, Marian and Richard Apple return to the stage for the first time since 2013, after a series of Zoom reunions during the pandemic. At Barbara’s house in Rhinebeck, New York, an ordinary meal becomes a place to reckon with an unsettled political moment. The family talks, tells stories, laughs and sings, while wondering whether people have come to define themselves chiefly by what they oppose.

Nelson writes and directs. Maryann Plunkett, Sally Murphy, Laila Robins and Jay O. Sanders reprise their Apple family roles, joined by Yvonne Woods as Richard’s partner. The new production is part of Nelson’s 12-play cycle about three Rhinebeck families.

Originally scheduled to close November 22, We’ll See has been extended through November 29. The Public will also present The Shape of Our Time, three free events honoring Nelson’s work, on November 4, 6 and 9.
