Aperture has opened a gallery and bookstore opposite the American Museum of Natural History.

Aperture opened a permanent home at 380 Columbus Avenue in September, placing a gallery and a specialist bookstore opposite the American Museum of Natural History. Its first installation, Aperture Loves New York, brings together photographs and books by more than twenty artists, among them Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Deana Lawson, Stephen Shore and Carrie Mae Weems.

The premise is well chosen. New York has been photographed so often that its familiar streets can seem to arrive already framed. Aperture’s selection turns attention to the people who fashioned that visual vocabulary, from street photographers to contemporary portraitists.

Curated by Aperture executive director Sarah Meister, the inaugural presentation runs through November 1. The gallery and bookstore are open Wednesday through Sunday.
