A great deal of butter has crossed the Atlantic in the service of Thomas Straker’s reputation.

The London chef, whose cooking videos turned flavored butter into an internet obsession, has opened Straker’s at 59 Grand Street. The New York restaurant occupies the former Lucky Strike address, a room with considerable downtown nostalgia attached to it. Straker’s menu draws on British and Italian influences, with seafood and a mussel flatbread among the talking points.

According to Eater, the premises underwent an extensive renovation, while Australian chef Luka Coyne leads the kitchen. This is not a temporary pop-up or a licensing exercise: the Soho restaurant is a substantial American outpost of Straker’s London business.

Straker has no shortage of online admirers. Whether they become regular customers at 59 Grand Street is another matter.
