A Sustained Becoming: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2026 presents work by Derriann Pharr, Simonette Quamina and Taylor Simmons. Opening October 1, it marks the latest installment of a residency program that has long made the museum a place to encounter ambitious art before the market has settled on its judgments.

Simmons works between figuration and abstraction; the show gives visitors an opportunity to consider his paintings alongside the distinct concerns of Pharr and Quamina. The institution’s reopened Harlem home is an important part of the occasion, giving the annual residents exhibition a newly visible setting.

The exhibition runs through January 3, 2027. For anyone curious about what the city’s next generation of artists is attempting, the residency show is a better place to begin than the auction results.
