Claire Danes, Zac Posen and Fran Drescher were among the guests celebrating the Whitney Museum of American Art’s new Roy Lichtenstein exhibition this week, ahead of its public opening on Sunday.
Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, opening October 11, brings together approximately 130 works spanning five decades, including famous Pop paintings, prints, sculpture, film and monumental murals. Curated by Meg Onli and artist Alex Da Corte, the show looks beyond Lichtenstein’s familiar comic-strip imagery to explore his lifelong fascination with copying, transformation and mass culture.
The museum began celebrations Tuesday, October 6, with a dinner for supporters and artists, followed by an opening reception Wednesday featuring music by DJ SHYBOI. Other attendees included Emmy Rossum, Marilyn Minter, Ryan McGinley and Tierra Whack, according to the Whitney.
Among the exhibition’s highlights are Look Mickey, Masterpiece, Drowning Girl and a recreation of the nearly 96-foot Greene Street Mural. The exhibition also reunites the works from Lichtenstein’s landmark 1962 show at Leo Castelli Gallery.
The Whitney has also unveiled an 18-piece collaboration with Gap and the Lichtenstein estate, featuring designs inspired by the artist’s distinctive graphic style.
Roy Lichtenstein: Like New runs October 11, 2026, through May 10, 2027, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, 99 Gansevoort Street, Manhattan.
